My dog has mucus in poop after vet visit for diarrhea. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 3 years and 1 month old | 9.5 lbs

I took my dog to the vet yesterday because he has been throwing up a lot and had diarrhea. They gave him an anti nausea shot and some metronidazole. My dog is more energetic, but something I'm concerned about is that he has been pooping a lot of mucus along with a bit of diarrhea. Any idea what could be wrong with him?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Mucus in the stool is commonly seen with colitis which is what the metronidazole is for. I think that this is ok for now as his diarrhea is likely improving after starting the medications. Good luck and have a great day!
