What to put on dog's ripped nose from digging that's safe to lick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 70 lbs

My dog keeps digging in the blankets to hide his done and ripped a layer of skin on his nose. Is there anything I can put on it that won’t harm him if he licks it off?

With that location, anything you put on his nose will be licked off almost immediately, so you are correct that you want something safe. I also try to use products that are not particularly tasty, so they lick less (so I don't like coconut oil products). My favorite product is simply Vitamin E. You can poke a hole in the capsule and apply the oil directly to the area. There are some topical Vitamin E salves that are safe as well, but you have to read the ingredients carefully. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and that Gunner's nose heals quickly. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
