My dog stopped eating for 3 days but seems fine. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 8 years and 5 months old | 98 lbs

I have a large American bulldog that suddenly stop eating which is very unusual for him. He is still drinking lots of water and using the bathroom number one and two. He does not have a fever and his gums are nice and pink. He is on his third day of not eating? What could be wrong?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Zeus evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck and have a great day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

A decrease in appetite can be a sign of a number of diseases in cats ranging from food sensitivities and tooth problems to gastrointestinal disease to kidney dysfunction. Since this problem has reoccurred I would recommend rechecking with your vet - checking blood work might be helpful at this point.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is certainly good that he is feeling well otherwise. However, that does not completely rule out something going on. I recommend that you try to entice his appetite with perhaps a new diet. You could also try adding chicken broth or dog grade gravy (you may find at your local pet store) to his food. If no improvement and his appetite continues to be abnormal, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!
