My cat's neck is irritated by collar. What safe ointment can I use?

What's a good ointment for my cat, he has dry skin that's a bit irritated under his neck where his collar was rubbing a bit. Is there a type I can buy at Rite Aid that could help prevent infection that would be safe if he was to accidentally lick the area?

You can try a little vitamin E or coconut oil if there is a dry or hairless patch, as these are both safe if your cat licks at it some. Keeping his collar off for a few days may also help any irritation resolve and heal. If there is an open wound, keeping it clean with a washcloth and using an Elizabethan collar (e-collar) or T-shirt to keep Tankers from licking or pawing at it can help it heal as well. If the area seems infected, is worsening, or is very bothersome, it would be best to bring Tankers to your vet to have the area cleaned and a course of antibiotics given to help it heal.
