My dog has itchy face sores and scabs. What's an affordable remedy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 3 years old | 125 lbs

My three year old pit bull has sores on her face, I do not have money to pay my electric bill much less a vet. The sores are scabby and thick, and there was one on her snout that eventually healed but left some small scabs around the bottom, and the rest hairless. She has a nickel sized one above her eye on her "forehead" and some other small ones, with thick black scabs. They seem to be itchy...I'm in the desert near a horse corral....flies?? Remedy? I applied Neosporin

I don't think lesions like this would be caused by fly bites. I would guess that these lesions are either from trauma or from a bacterial skin infection (often secondary to allergies) although it is difficult to know without being able to examine them in person. Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend any home remedies and I think that ultimately she will need to see the vet for a diagnosis and treatment. You could ask around and see if there is any subsidized veterinary care in your area, or you could also look into Care Credit which could help with payment options.
