My cat has loose stool, acting better, should I give the antibiotic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 years and 6 months old | 9 lbs

My cat has had loose liquid stool for the past couple of days including today. Took him to the vet, no weight loss, no fever, normal heart rate, behavior is also normal, appetite is normal and water drinking is normal. He was throwing up friday to Sunday morning. No more vomit but still has loose stool. He’s acting better should I be concerned? My vet gave me an antibiotic should I give it to him? Thanks a lot.

Kirito is adorable. Thanks for including a picture. I'm glad to hear that it sounds like he is already improving, but I would recommend giving the medication. Metronidazole is an antibiotic, but it specifically works well to decrease inflammation in the large intestine and help resolve diarrhea, so I would recommend giving it as directed to help resolve the diarrhea. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and that Kirito's diarrhea resolves soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
