My dog's on chicken & rice. Can I switch to beef due to allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 6 years and 6 months old | 25 lbs

My dog is on a chicken and rice diet (seen by the vet) for bloody diarrhea after having a bad reaction to a new joint supplement. I think he developed an allergy to chicken. He rubs his face in the couch after he eats and then licks and chews his paws for the first few minutes. I don’t think it’s a severe allergy as I don’t see a rash or swelling. Is it okay to switch to hamburger meat with rice? He’s allergic to fish. Are there any other alternatives? His follow up appointment is in 3 days.

When we recommend a bland diet you can use either chicken or beef with white rice. The most important thing is that the fat is cooked off. So, either boil the hamburger or rinse it well after it is cooked. If Teddy is rubbing his face and licking his paws immediately after eating but not other times of the day it may just be that he is cleaning his face since he is not used to eating food that sticks to his fur. So, if it continues with hamburger and rice, it may not be an allergy that is causing the rubbing and licking. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and answered your question.
