My kitten's kneading hurts! How can I stop her sharp claws?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 months and 23 days old | 5 lbs

I rescued my cat from a neighbor, she was 8 was old and the mother had taken off, the father was their cat and clearly not neutered. Emma now is almost 5 mo old. She likes to suckle on my clothes, near my arms or neck, that is ok but of course she has nails, and kneads them into my skin as she is doing this. I have attempted to stop this behavior by pushing her face away as soon as she starts it, tapping her on the nose gently a few times when she starts and saying no, to no avail. What to do

It is normal and common for cats to knead or "make biscuits" as a way of showing affection. The problem with kittens is that their nails are so sharp! I usually recommend trimming their nails every week to keep them short and dull, so it is not painful. Another option would be use Soft Paws ( https://www.softpaws.com/ ). Finally, you can sometimes utilize a blanket to have her knead on the blanket, so her claws do not touch your skin. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
