Why do my small dogs pee on rugs at night after house training?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 8 lbs

What would normally seem like a common question.. I've 2 mini Jacks - Henry (2yr) & Kiki (1yr) i've made so many attempts to fully toilet train them and whilst during the daytime they are mostly good, when its bed time and nobody is around to supervise - they go on our living room rugs. I've installed a dog flap and everything and they are well used to it ...until our backs are turned :( what am in doing wrong??

Unfortunately, small dogs are notoriously difficult to house train. You have to keep them supervised 100% of the time until they are completely house trained. I am attaching a couple of articles on house training below that may be helpful for you. https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&catId=102897&id=8569058&ind=404&objTypeID=1007 https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&catId=102897&id=4951739&ind=402&objTypeID=1007 I wish I had a simple solution, but the best way to house train is to keep both dogs either in a crate or on a leash that you are holding at all times (so they are never unsupervised) until they never go in the house. It is a very tedious process, but is the only good way to make them reliable with their house training. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
