Did too much flea medicine cause my sick dog's sudden death?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | unneutered | 48 lbs

I am torn, our family beagle of 12 years passed away. I miss him so very much. Sick for the past year. He has been sick fatigue, drastic 2 weeks of weight loss, lack of appetite for 4 days, difficultly peeing and jelly like poop x1 week. He had to go to a friends house for 2 days. Came back with an outrageous amount of fleas, I rushed to apply otc topical flea medicine , Im afraid I applied too much. It was applied Friday am and he passed Sunday am. I’m struggling that I applied too much!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I definitely understand how you feel and I am so sorry for your loss. It is very unlikely that this happened from applying too much flea medicine. This is more likely due to the other symptoms you mentioned including the diarrhea, difficulty urinating and fatigue. This could have been due to a disease that had not been identified. Again I am so sorry for your loss and I will keep you in my thoughts as you go through this difficult time.
