My cat is suddenly peeing on cushions. Why is this happening?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 years and 6 months old | 3 lbs

My 6y old Female neutered cat, never peed outside her litterbox, only occasionally in the garden but never inside the house. However over the last month i noticed pee on several cushions, several times, twice on patio cushions and last night on cushions inside the house! What could it be?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She is adorable! Inappropriate urination is often a medical issue and possibilities include feline lower urinary tract disease, a urinary tract infection, urinary tract stones, among other possible medical reasons. Another possibility is that this is behavioral in nature. I recommend that you have Pixie evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. If it is behavioral, sometimes a product called Feliway can help. You may find that online or at your local pet store. Good luck and best wishes!
