Dog's red, green eye discharge. Home remedies or affordable vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 years and 6 months old | 18 lbs

Diamond has an eye infection or something. It's all red and it's oozing a little green stuff, is there some home remedies I could do? Cause I'm really really low on money, I do clean it out with a warm cotton ball everyday, is there a chance he could lose his eye? I really hope not. It's been like it for about 2 weeks, some days it looks a lot better, but I know it's some kind of infection, And I'm really worried. I also wanted to let you know you guys are awesome, keep up the great work

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! We really appreciate the kind words. Unfortunately, it is hard to know how to best approach this at home as it is not possible to know what this is just by seeing a picture of the eye closed. However, the discharge you describe is concerning for an infection. This would require an examination. This could be something like an ulcer which may require antibiotics. An ulcer could in theory result in loss of the function of the eye if severe enough. You can always check with your local humane society as they may offer more affordable veterinary care. Good luck and have a great day!
