Dog's neck hair loss not improving with hydrocortisone. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 11 months old | 18 lbs

I noticed last week my dog had a patch of hair missing around his neck. As soon as I saw it I went for the Hydrocortisone ointment but now a week later it haven’t gotten any better. I noticed that it’s hard and dark on the outside and a lighter color on the inside. My mom mentioned that it might be a ring worm but I’m not sure.

Ringworm is normally dry, but the area looks like it has some moisture and discharge which is not normally seen with ringworm. If the area hasn't gotten any better, then I would recommend having your veterinarian examine it. They can take a small sample from the area and examine it under the microscope. Then they can determine if the problem is bacteria, yeast, fungus (like ringworm) or something else and determine the right medication for it. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
