My stray cat has a soft, painless paw growth. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

Maybe a month ago I noticed this growth on a stray cats paw which feels softer than paw pad itself and it doesn't seem that it's painful for the cat if you touch it or walk. The cat is fairly young too, probably less than 3 years, possibly 2. She seems to be drinking a lot of water too but it might be because of hot weather and also she's nursing a month old kitten. I know this should be seen by a veterinarian but right now I don't have money for it, but I want to know if it maybe isnt fatal.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This could even be an abscess. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. Usually this unfortunately cannot be treated at home since we do not know what it is. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!
