My cat has red, dry ear bumps spreading to his face. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 11 lbs

Spike (1yr old, indoor cat, Abyssunian)- had bumps (postules) on external ears 2 months ago and over time have flattened and caused his ear skin to become very red/dry/warm. Symptoms: NO itching, NO extra grooming, no fever, no change in appetite, digestive is fine, activity normal. This "rash" is spreading now to the inside of ears and upper forehead around eyes. I have tried- Synotic, Tresaderm, Clindamysin, doxycycline, prednisone, and cytology came back with nothing. What can I do now?

There is a chance he has an autoimmune disorder causing this. The next step here would be a fungal culture +/- skin biopsy. That almost always gives you your answer so that you can decide on how to move forward with treatment. Best wishes with your pet Spike and I hope that his skin issues resolve soon! Take care.
