Cat losing fur, itching, and fleas. Is Advantage or Bravecto better?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 10 months old

My cat is treated with Advantage, now it's ten days until the next dose,I found a single flea on him,a week ago his fur started to fall, first on the shoulders and now on the back,it's not fully fallen,it looks like very short cut,I doubt he might has that insect that eat hair(don't know the English word for it),he also feels itchy and making big blooded scratches,it might be allergy too, is Advantage or Bravecto more effective if he has that insect I mentioned or what else I should do to stop it?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thankfully, you have a few options here. I recommend you consider using a product called Capstar which is to kill a lot of fleas at once to complement a flea preventative product like Advantage. You can go ahead and give another dose of Advantage now as well. I would not give up on Advantage just yet. Continue to use it for now as this flea may be was a one time occurrence and the Advantage was still being effective. Another option is switching to Bravecto now though again Advantage may still be effective so it may be best to exhaust its use. Good luck and have a great day!
