Dog recovering from bloody diarrhea: mucus stool & dark urine normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 6 years and 6 months old | 25 lbs

Dog had bloody diarrhea. New supplement possibly upset his stomach. Stool was tested negative for parasites. Was prescribed Metronidazole 250mg and Fortiflora. On day 2 of medication. Amount of blood has lessened, but stool now has lots of mucus and urine is a dark yellow/brown tint. Dog is still eating and drinking water. On a white rice, bland chicken diet plus the Fortiflora and a few pieces mixed in of Hills digestive care prescription diet dog food.

Hello, sorry to hear about Teddy. It sounds like he is trending in the right direction. Dogs with diarrhea will continue to have signs for up to 5 days after starting the medication. As long as he is improving this should be ok. The dark urine may be associated with the GI bleeding. If his signs worsen or if his signs persist longer than 5 days, then there could be something else going on (pancreatitis, liver disease, or kidney disease) and he should be re-evaluated immediately. Continue the bland diet for another 3 days then transition him to his regular diet. Hope this helps and best of luck.
