Why doesn't my young cat purr or show affection when petted?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 7.5 lbs

My cat Chloe is Very loving I got her from a broken down family as a newborn She never met her mother, I practically raised her into a respectful young female cat, but the problems are she does not like to be held and she will try to escape so I let her, She’s very young only a year old But She Loves To play But her love is undetectable at times for instance she will Never Purr When I pet her Shell just look at my hand like what is that is it cause she’s young?

If Chloe was feral or not handled much as a kitten, it could be that she just doesn't really know how to purr or interact. Giving her time and letting her approach you on her terms for pets, cuddles, etc can help ensure she feels comfortable and continues to warm up to you. It may also be that she shows her love in other ways-- which is perfectly fine-- such as playing with you, laying near you, asking for pets, or even blinking lazily at you (a cat smile!).
