My senior Shih Tzu is coughing, choking, vibrating, and can't walk. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 15 years old | 11 lbs

My Shi-Tzu is 15 and in great shape. A cough started a couple of weeks ago. Because of an ear canal inflammation and shots I took her to a vet. He said her heart was okay. But today she can't walk without coughing and choking and it felt like her body was vibrating. She has been on prednisone for a week for the ear inflammation. Should I stop it? Or is she just starting to die??

I would recommend bringing Chelsea back to the veterinarian and getting x-rays of her chest. This will tell you if she has something lung related. There are a lot of different things that can cause a cough. It can be anything from a tracheal collapse to a lung lesion. Without chest x-rays it is hard to say what is causing the cough. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
