My dog pants heavily at night in her crate. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Female | spayed | 14 years and 4 months old | 13 lbs

Cotton started panting at night when we put her in her crate to go to sleep. If you ignore her for too long, she whines and becomes upset. It's not dehydration. I provide her plenty of water. The only thing that seems to get her to calm down and only for a little while is to sleep on our couch... Like she does all day long. She only started these heavy breathing episodes a couple days ago though. Should I book an appointment with her veterinarian?

If this is a new thing I would recommend taking her to the veterinarian. They can listen to her and they may want to perform x-rays to see if it is heart or lung related. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
