Can my dog have surgery after an allergic reaction to a bee sting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 4.5 lbs

my dog got stung by a bee today and had an allergic reaction that caused her muzzle to swell up. We took her to emergency vet and they treated her. However, she’s supposed to have surgery next wednesday to get 3 baby teeth extracted. do you think it’ll still be safe for her to go under?

If Macy's muzzle is back to its normal size by Wednesday and she does not show any other signs of allergic reaction such as a fever or breathing trouble and she is healthy, then there should be absolutely no problem for her to have anesthesia. Your veterinarian likely received the medical notes from your emergency room visit and will be aware.

Hi and thanks for your request regarding Luna. If she is now not showing any signs at all, I would recommend to go ahead with the surgery (providing that pre-surgical health checks are all within normal limits) as the allergic reaction is unlikely to cause any problem at all after 48hours from start of the signs. I would as recommend to have her checked next time if the signs you describe occur as systemic life threatening reactions must be treated promptly.
