Can my dog's autoimmune disease or ear infection spread to my puppy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Female | spayed | 5 months and 8 days old | 36 lbs

Our older standard poodle -Callie has auto immune problem, her ears have constant infection. My new standard poodle pup - Coco from another breeder is only over five months old, is changing teeth, is it a concern if they share the same water bowl and coco licks Callie’s ears? Coco is changing teeth so there is open wound in her mouth now, I am concerned Callie’s problem will pass to coco via sharing water bowl, play and ear locking etc. Please share with your professional advice. Thanks so much

Hi there! I'm very sorry to hear about Callie's troubles with her autoimmune disease. However, if it is truly an autoimmune disease as you say, then Callie's issues are hers alone. We currently do not believe that autoimmune diseases can be passed from one pet to another, like a bacterial or viral infection. She shouldn't pass anything to Coco in this sense. What I would be weary of, is if Coco is licking Callie's ears, this could encourage Callie to develop bacterial infections in the ears. It is unlikely that Coco is going to contract something by licking Callie's ears, but I would still discourage this behavior. I hope you find this answer helpful! Best of luck with Callie and her new friend, Coco!
