Why is my old dog coughing, weak, not eating, and breathing fast?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | 9 years and 9 months old | 18 lbs

My almost 10 yr old pomerainian Ozzy developed a hacking a hairball up type of cough about 3 weeks ago.. I was told as long as he is eating and drinking he will be fine.. as of this afternoon he doesn't want to eat and drink anything and seems a little weak.. but the cough sounds different.. it's fast and not as strong and maybe 10 in a row then maybe her will gag as if he is going to hack a hairball or something.. his breathing is fast.. I'm very scared I love this dig so much!

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. There are many, many different reasons that Ozzy could have a cough. I know you are worried so you really need to get him to a vet for an exam. I think you are right to be worried. Here are some possibilities for his symptoms: * collapsing trachea * heart disease (like heart failure) * heartworm disease * kennel cough * asthma * lung worms There are many others but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Please get him into your vet for an exam as soon as you can. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
