Why is my cat frequently coughing and sneezing like a hairball?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

I have a cat who has recently been coughing/sneezing with her chin lowered, as if trying to clear hair from her throat. I know that all cats do this from time to time, but she seems to be doing it too frequently. She is otherwise fine - no other symptoms. She is a 10 year old tortie who is somewhat overweight and has short but very dense fur.

At this age an upper respiratory infection is less likely, unless she has not been vaccinated in the past few years. i would recommend a vet visit ASAP, it could be something else such as nasal polyps for example.
