Dog has eye gunk after boarding. Is it an infection or canine cough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 10 months old | 20 lbs

My dog has been home from a week’s worth of boarding for a few days now and the last couple I’ve noticed some extra eye gunk forming, particularly in the right eye. I’m not sure if he could’ve caught something there or not. The boarding resort called me a few days in advance just to let me know that they’ve had some recent cases of canine cough. He is up to date on all the vaccines he needed to board, including canine influenza. Should I worry or just wait it out?

Monitor for redness or squinting and see your veterinarian if either develops or if Kobe is pawing or rubbing at his eyes. If the discharge changes color, this is also a reason to see your vet. Use a moist, soft cloth to clean Kobe's eyes as needed.
