What special food can I give my cat for post-surgery recovery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

Wolf has just returned home from getting a shot, being neutered and getting his tail amputated after coming home looking like his tail was run over by a car. He has several medications we are to give him and he is isolated from the other cats in a recovery space. He is eating and drinking like normal but is very boney. Is there anything that I feed him to help him recover in addition to his usual dry food? Pumpkin or coconut oil or something like that? Thanks.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! That is a great question and actually very commonly asked. There is really nothing special to feed him. The most important thing is to make sure that he is eating with a good appetite so I would just keep him on his usual diet if that is what he likes. Good luck and have a great day!
