My dog ate trash and wax paper. Is she okay? What signs to watch for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 1 month old | 78 lbs

My 78 lb 3 y/o dog tore the trash apart today and ate a large baconator sandwich and 2 large poppy seed muffins including the wax paper they are baked in. This was about 6 hours ago and she is acting completely normal. How long would it take for her to exhibit signs of poisoning? Since it's been 6 hours, is she going to be okay?

Monitor her for the next 24 hours. Watch for lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, straining to defecate or abdominal pain. If she goes beyond this with no symptoms, then she may be in the clear. If she develops any of the above symptoms, have her physically examined by your veterinarian. Pancreatitis or intestinal obstruction are real concerns after such a "meal".
