My cat mirrors my mood. Can cats really sense their owner's emotions?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 6.3 lbs

I noticed that when I'm excited, sad or neutral, or even nervous my cat mirrors my mood and stays by my side half of the time she'll come and find me. She'll also find me if she's feeling a certain way, one time she knew I was with another cat and she felt nervous so that whole night she slept under my side curled up. Is it true that this can happen or is it a myth?

Hello! Cats and other pets can absolutely feed off of our emotions! It sounds like Jackie is a particularly empathetic kitty. Since she has a pattern of this, try to remember to stay calm and confident whenever something stressful is happening for her, such as a car ride or a vet trip. Your calmness will help her cope as well. :) I hope this is helpful! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
