Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed
I have an appointment to get a mom cat spayed tomorrow and she is full with milk. Her kittens are almost 10 weeks old and are weaned. Is it safe to spay if she has breasts full of milk?

If Naomi still is full of milk, there is potentially more risk of bleeding and/or infection. We generally recommend that kittens be kept away from mom and not allowed to nurse for at least 2 weeks before the mom is spayed. I would recommend contacting your vet today and let them know what is going on and have them help you decide if you should delay her surgery. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

It would be better to wait until she has weaned the kittens before having her spayed. However, you do need to keep her indoors and away from intact tomcats until the procedure is done because she can become pregnant again soon after giving birth.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and thanks for being a responsible cat owner! I would say you can get her spayed in about 2 weeks. Obviously keep her inside during this time. In one week start putting out canned kitten food for them several times per day. They are often showing interest in food by 3-4 weeks and can be completely weaned by 5-6 weeks. Hang in there through the yowling- I know how obnoxious it can be! Best of luck to you, Felicia, and the kittens!

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You do not indicate how old the kitten is, but I usually recommend spaying about 2 weeks after the kittens are fully weaned ( usually at 6-8 weeks). If the kitten is on full feed & can be away from his mother for a full 24 hours, then she can be spayed. The 2 weeks just allow the breast tissue to recede a bit & helps with surgery. Thank you.
