Puppy has red, swollen eyes and scabs on head and neck. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 13 days old | 4 lbs

Benji had a cough and often squinting his eyes which had become somewhat red with discharge. We had him checked and was given prescription. The cough is gone but his eyes have become red and swollen. We were given another meds and it does not seem to help. Then just 2 days ago, he developed some scabs which have worsened fast in the neck, ears, head and back but not in the legs or tummy area. Please help.

I'm so sorry to hear that Benji is not feeling well. Since the areas affected are only on the head and neck, I would be worried that you are dealing with something that we call puppy strangles. I am attaching more information about it below. https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952835 I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Benji again ASAP and decide on which medication he needs now. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and that Benji feels better soon. Thanks for using PetCoach.
