My dog ate a dead bird. Should I worry about parvo, rabies, or worms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | 3 months and 28 days old | 20 lbs

While walking with my dog, I suddenly noticed that he chews a dead bird and I attempted to take it out because there were also worms dropping from his mouth. Is there a possibility that Storm could get an illness like parvo or rabies? Sorry for my bad english. It is not my first language. Hoping for your prompt response. Thank you!

Hello, sorry to hear about storm. Birds do not carry these viruses as they only affect mammals. Therefore Storm will not contract either rabies or parvo from the bird. However, he may get a pretty severe gastrointestinal inflammation which may cause vomiting and diarrhea. Some parasites may also be obtained from birds. If he does develop any GI signs then have him evaluated by his veterinarian immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.
