Puppy limping with swollen paws. What home remedies can I use?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 9 days old | 7.72 lbs

We left our 5 month old puppy home the other day outside and when we got home his front paw nails we bleeding from him jumping up at the glass door. We cleaned and treated these and have now noticed he is limping and his two back paws are swollen with a small red scab on one toe. How can we react this without spending $200 on a vet trip I really can’t afford. We have started to soak his feet in epsom salt and have seen a small reduction in swelling but we doubt it is broken as he can still walk.

The epsom salt soak was a good idea. You can continue that but add some Betadine solution to the water. Make it a light iced tea color. You should be able to get this at your local pharmacy/chemist. ( https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/31054/Betadine-Antiseptic-Liquid-15ml ) Soak 2-3 times per day for a total of 5 minutes at a time. He should be fine but if after a few days there does not seem to be much improvement you will need to get him to your vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
