Dog hit by car, can't walk on leg. Should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 1 month old | 38 lbs

Our dog was hit by a moving cars tire last night. The only injury we’ve seen thus far is one leg. He is unable to bear weight. Otherwise he appears to be ok. We’ve wrapped his leg in an ace bandage for extra support. And we’re keeping him off of his leg. He’s eating and drinking as normal and has been able to urine when we take out. He has not had a bowel movement but typically does this when we walk him twice a day. Should we take to vet or continue to watch him?

Poor Biggie! If he is not able to put weight on the injured leg, he definitely needs to see a veterinarian as I would be concerned that he may have a fracture or dislocation. Your veterinarian can take x-rays to determine what's wrong and what treatment is needed - possible surgical repair, splinting, or rest and pain medication at home.
