How do I house train my new puppy living in a second-floor apartment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I am getting a puppy (yellow lab, male) in a few weeks he will be 8 weeks old &ready to be brought home from the breeder. I live in an apartment on the second floor; my concern is house training because i can pick him up if he starts to pee/poop in the house but i cant just bring him outside quickly..i have to walk down the stairs &out the building. Any suggestions on how to make this more effective? My thoughts are to just bring him outside every 15-20 mins/reward when he gows outside.?

Hi there. Yes, I think your plan sounds perfect :) This is exactly what I recommend for housetraining puppies, regardless of whether you live in an apartment building or in a house with a yard. By taking your pup out really frequently, you give him lots of practice at using the bathroom in the right place and being rewarded for it. This also keeps his bladder empty, which greatly reduces the risk of accidents in the apartment in between potty breaks.
