My cat's post-surgery IV catheter wasn't removed. Is it harmful?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 4 months old | 10 lbs

After the operation he had, he didn't wanted to eat anything so he was drip-fed multivitamins for a few days. But vet didn't remove the intravenous(needle of the serum i don't know its name) just in case. But would it harm my cat?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! What a cutie he is!!! Yes, a catheter that remains in place for longer than 4-5 days can be harmful as it can cause infections, vasculitis and discomfort. I highly recommend that you take him back so that they can remove the catheter. Good luck and have a great day!
