Why is my new cat hiding and fearful, especially around my husband?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Snowshoe | Male | neutered

our new neutered cat Siamese snowshoe stays under or bed all day only comes out in evening, very little in living room, up all night. affectionate, eats well, uses litter box. He is especially jittery around my husband & runs from room if he makes a sudden movement or coughs. we've had him over a month. What kind of behavior is this?

It's a typical fearful cat behavior, one of my 3 cats is exactly like that, she pretty much lives under our bed during daytime, she rarely comes out. when the night falls she comes out and this is pretty much when her life begins. i'v had another cat in the past with almost identical behavior, i believe it is a combination of a character with a possible trauma in early life. just over a month though is not enough time to determine if this is how he is going to be in the future, he might still snap out of it and become less timid/fearful.
