Why is my dog breathing short inhales and heavy exhales? Heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 9 months old | 20 lbs

What is considered abnormal breathing for dogs? She seems to have short inhales, and short heavy exhales. She'll breathe normal when she's touched (distraction) then goes back to it. Could it be the heat?

Any breathing that you think is abnormal should be checked by your vet. It is very possible that Mia is breathing this way due to the heat but without examining her myself and seeing what she is actually doing then it is hard for me to say. If she is breathing normally when awake and when she is doing her normal activity I don't think I would be too worried at this stage. Of course, you know her best so if you are worried you should have her checked out. It is better to be safe than sorry! I suggest you video tape the breathing and show it to your vet. This would be most helpful. Best wishes to you and MIa.
