My shy kitten hisses when I pick him up. How can I make him feel safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year old

I have had my kitten for about 8 months now and he is still very shy. Every time I try to go and pick him up, he hisses and meows really loud. When I am holding him, he is calm. Why is this? And what can I do to make him feel more at ease.

Hi there. It sounds like Oscar may be stressed. I recommend two things to try: 1. [Feliway diffusers](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/feliway-classic-30-day-starter-kit-plug-in-diffuser-and-refill-for-cat) in the house. This product uses a synthetic pheromone to decrease any anxiety or aggression. 2. [Environmental enrichment toys](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/category/cat/cat-toys) and increased [playtime](https://www.petcoach.co/article/7-reasons-to-play-with-your-cat) to keep Oscar engaged and not bored may also help to make him less shy Hope this helps. If you have more questions feel free to post again. Best wishes!
