My senior cat is whimpering, not eating or drinking. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 16 years and 11 months old | 8 lbs

I have a 17-year-old tortie calico. I took her to the vet yesterday because she wasn't eating much. The vet said "her stomach wasn't moving" He prescribed her Lactulose/Reglan Syrup. She threw it up multiple times. I called vet today right before closing, he advised stopping syrup and to give her 1 tsp coconut oil. She took that and kept it down. She has not drunk water all day though and is letting out whimpering cries, should I be concerned?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Azriel. Yes, I would be concerned that she is not eating. Cats are very good at hiding signs of illness. So when it becomes apparent that they are not feeling well, there is typically significant disease. I would recommend that she has bloodwork and urine testing to determine the cause of her inappetance. From there, treatment can be prescribed. She will likely need fluids as she is most likely dehydrated due to not eating properly. In the meantime, continue to try to offer food and water. If she will not cat food, you can try meat baby food, tuna or boiled chicken. I hope this information helps!
