My cat's surgery incision is red. Is licking and loose skin normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 8.5 lbs

Zoey has bladder surgery to remove a large stone on July 9th. She’s been acting normally now, eating and drinking, wanting to play, etc. she has a lot of excess loose skin around her incision, it’s kind of in a “crease” on her tummy. I know she’s been licking at her incision a little, but it hasn’t been excessive-But I can see that it is visibly a bit irritated. Does her incision look normal? Should I seek further treatment? is there anything I should do? Thank you.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It looks good to me. The redness isn't terrible and doesn't worry me. The hanging saggy belly skin is normal for a cat and is more obvious after you shave the fur. If she is licking I'd use an E-collar. She is likely licking 10 times more than you are seeing. I wish Zoey a speedy recovery!
