My senior dog snaps at new puppy. How can I help them get along?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 13 years and 6 months old | 18 lbs

I have a 14 yr old female beagle. She hasn't interacted with many other dogs. Just yesterday, I bought another 6 week old female beagle. I introduced the dogs to each other as well. The older dog didn't seem to show any interest in the puppy and actually avoided her as much as possible. A few times the older dog acted outaggressively by snapping at the puppy. The puppy is very interested in the older dog and badly wants to play with her. How do I help them get along with each other?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! At almost 14 years old Kissy is probably arthritic, can't see or hear as well and probably prefers to sleep mostly. A puppy may be a bit much to be thrown at her. I would suggest not allowing the puppy access to Kissy, so baby gate the puppy, have the puppy on a leash so she won't get hurt by Kissy acting out aggressively, start teaching the puppy "manners". Go slow with the introduction. Do not allow the puppy to keep going at Kissy with out intervening. Puppies are a lot and we do not want the puppy to get bitten. My advice is watch them, leash the puppy, separate them frequently when you can't watch them and give it time. Good luck!
