Should I worry if my newborn kitten is lethargic with an open mouth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | unspayed | 3 days old

My newborn kitten's mouth is open while sleeping. She's a five day old kitten. Her mom doesn't want to be with her so we're the ones who take care and feed her. The last four days, she was well and moves a lot. But today, her mouth is open and she doesn't move that much and just lying on her bed but she still drinks kitten milk. I timed her breathing and it was 19 times per minute. Should I be worried?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh no!! I am very worried about this kitten. I don’t think she will pull through. If you can get her to a vet I would do so immediately. Sometimes we never know who some kittens don’t make it, whether is a genetic or congenital issue or infection. But the mother usually knows. I with you the best!
