My Bichon has sudden breathing issues. Is it a reverse sneeze?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | 10 years and 7 months old

I have a male Bichon, he’s 10 yrs old. In great health. He does have this problem of acting like he has a hard time getting his breath. He sits up real straight, gets real still and take these shorth breaths like he can’t breathe very well. Then he seems to be ok. He may do this 2 or 3 times a day. These episodes last about 30 seconds and he seems scared until it over. He’s been doing this for a few years and I have asked the vet and they never really say anything. Is this normal for Bichon’s.

I am sorry to hear about Max. What you are describing sounds like it could be a reverse sneeze. I would recommend videotaping these episodes and showing them to your vet. You can read more about this condition at https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952493 . If it is happening several times a day, your vet may consider doing a trial of antihistamine or treating prophylactically for nasal mites. I would let them know how frequently it is happening. It is usually not something of serious concern, but can be a sign of irritation of the nasal passages.
