My kitten's nails crack when clipped. Is this normal or harmful?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 months and 28 days old | 5 lbs

Whenever I clip my kittens claws they crack and I've tried clipping quickly to prevent it but it doesn't work. Will this effect their nails or is it normal to look like this?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. A little fraying or ragged edges on cut nails can be normal, but it may also mean that your trimmers are a bit dull. It may be worth investing in new nail trimmers - some of the less expensive ones truly don't seem to cut as well as more expensive nail trimmers. But it shouldn't hurt their nails long term
