Kitten with coccidiosis: Is severe diarrhea normal on medication?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 3 days old

My kitten just got diagnosed with coccidiosis a couple of days ago. My vet prescribed him albon susp 5%, he's been taking it for the last 3 days. Yesterday I was really excited because he wasn't leaking poop, so I thought maybe we got through the worst, but still had him sleep in the bathroom just in case. When we went to check on him this morning though, it was AWFUL. There were poop droppings all over the floor, not just like he was leaking. Should I keep up with the medicine, or back the vet

Hello and thank you very much for your question. The coccidiosis treatment that was prescribed to you is generally the most safe and affective on the market. It can be normal to have periods of explosive diarrhea or multiple defecation’s for up to seven days after the treatment starts. My advice is as follows: As long as he continues to eat normally, drink normally, play, and not vomit, I would continue with the treatment without going back to the vet. If he seems lethargic or sick or he just does not seem himself, however, I would take him back to the vet or call the vet as soon as possible to get a consultation. If you decide to keep him at home and continue the treatment, the diarrhea and related side effects of the medications should be gone by 7 to 10 days after the treatment began. Thanks a lot for presenting your question to our consultation service. Have a great day.
