My dog's back legs are suddenly weak. Is this an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

What should I do ? I was going to sleep around 1AM and my dog turbena had been walking around as normal, but I noticed she had difficulty trying to jump up onto the bed to lay down with me, I picked her up without really thinking about it and helped her onto the bed and fell asleep. later when I woke up around 5 a.m. she could no longer support her own weight in her back legs, when I call her name she attempts to sit up and looks at me she continues to wag her tail and try to walk though

Poor Turbena! I'm afraid this is very concerning. Loss of function in the rear legs is most often due to a "slipped" or herniated disc in the spine, but could also be due to some other neurologic problem or illness. This problem needs immediate treatment for the best chance of recovery, so I would recommend taking Turbena to the vet now. He/she can do a complete neurologic exam as well as x-rays or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment right away.
