My dog has seizures and poor quality of life. Is euthanasia best?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 7 years and 11 months old

My dog is still having epileptic fits even though his meds have been changed multiple times. Hes not happy anymore he looks really depressed and his quality of life has changed dramatically. Am i being selfish in trying new meds every few months just so i can keep him or should i be thinking this is cruel and start thinking about euthanasia. I love him dearly and want whats best for him. Any advice please

First off, I'm very sorry you are in this situation. It's quite tough. I work for a home euthanasia service, so I face these questions with my clients all the time. I tell them to look at the dog's quality of life. I suggest making a list of five things the dog loved to do, and if they are no longer doing at least two of them, then their quality of life has declined to where euthanasia should be considered. If you are saying that Ceaser is still having seizures despite multiple medication changes and his quality of life has changed dramatically, then letting him go peacefully may be best for him. From what you are telling me, it sounds like you are very dedicated owner and have been doing everything in your power for him. Unfortunately sometimes that isn't enough. I don't think you are being selfish, you just want what is best for him, and you are showing you aren't selfish by asking if it's time to let him go. Ultimately I can't tell you to do one thing or another, but it sounds like to me from your post that you are leaning towards letting him go peacefully. You have done so much for him, and it would be ok to take that path if you feel he's simply not getting better and his quality of life has declined. If you'd like to consult with me to discuss this further, I'd be glad to speak with you. Otherwise, I hope this has helped. Good luck.
