My dog has red in her poop but is acting fine. Should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Standard Schnauzer | Female | spayed | 8 years and 1 month old | 34 lbs

My dog had blotches of red in her stool. I believe this to have been blood, as she hasn’t eaten anything red in color. Other than that everything looked healthy, she’s acting fine, no diarriah or sighns of discomfort. Can I wait to take her to the vet or does this seem to be a more serious matter? Thank you.

As long as Isabelle is behaving normally, you can watch her at home. Consider a 24 hour fast, allowing small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food and gradually increase the amount if no other symptoms develop. Feed bland until the stool is normal then transition slowly to her regular diet. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. if any of these symptoms develop, have Isabelle physically examined by your vet.
