Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 6 months old | 8 lbs
How to know if a momma cat is finished nursing? When I checked her nipples, you have to squeeze pretty firmly to get any milk and it isn't much at all. The lady who gave her to me swears the cat is finished nursing, but has never seen the kittens nor knows when they were delivered. I want to get her spayed, but I want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong. This cat has had 5 litters. I do not live near her old home so she will not be able to return. She does not seem distressed or anxious.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If she is no longer near where the kittens would be then you will have to assume she is done. I would give her a month or so to dry out. It does take time after kittens are weaned for the milk to stop coming, so finding milk still present isn't abnormal. There is not real way to tell otherwise. She will go back in to heat soon so keep her indoors. I wish you the best!

Hello. The kittens should be fully weaned by now. If they are eating solid food they will do fine being away from her. Any milk that she may still be producing will be very low quality, anyway. Once she returns from her surgery, she may still be affectionate to her kittens, but may not allow them to nurse. At some point, she would have stopped this on her own & her milk will dry up altogether. This is a good time to spay her. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
