Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 3 years and 7 months old | 52 lbs
Hi, my dog is a beagle/border collie mix and he’s 3.5 years old. I just noticed it (because I don’t think I’ve ever pulled up his eyelid), but he has a light brown spot that is visible when I pull his eyelids as far as they go back (petting/playing with him). I was wondering if this is something I should get him checked out for? He went to the vet a few weeks ago and they didn’t say anything, but not sure if they pulled up his eyelids.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think it would be a good idea to mention this to your veterinarian next time he goes in. However, this may be normal. Sometimes there are changes in pigmentation in that region of the eye which are not considered abnormal especially if not bothering the patient. Good luck and have a good night!

I wouldn't be concerned about those pigment changes on Jackson's eyelid margins. They are probably just normal pigment changes, however if you notice Jackson starts showing any other signs of ill health (like eye discharge, hair loss, itchiness, or red eyes) then I would recommend having him examined by your veterinarian. I would recommend taking Jackson to a veterinarian. He may have an infection in his eye in which case he should not be going to daycare since it can be contagious. He could also have a scratch on his eye while can be painful. Your veterinarian will stain his eye to rule out a scratch and can [provide medication to make him feel much better. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

It looks like Jackson may have a cherry eye, or prolapsed third eyelid gland. While it's likely not a medical emergency, it's probably uncomfortable for him so I would take him to your vet as soon as you can. They may want to make sure the eye itself is not damaged and try to replace the gland. He may need eye medication. If this problem recurs sometimes surgery may be needed to tack the gland into place.
